Performing adequate maintenance on your 4x4 Offroad vehicle isn't as difficult as it may seem if you keep a few key points in mind. Things get complicated when you want to use the same offroad vehicle for street driving. However, it's possible, considering that some spare parts are interchangeable for both applications, but in others, we'll have to get used to changing parts depending on the intended use.

In this post, we'll present some essential items and products to consider for maintaining your 4x4.

Oil filter

  • Needs? Check the oil level and change it regularly based on the type of oil and the mileage covered during that period.
  • What could you be doing wrong? Failing to perform necessary maintenance could void your warranty or lead to adding additives to the oil. Nowadays, engine oils contain a blend of compatible additives that provide maximum protection for the off-road vehicle's engine. However, if you add other additives, you'll disrupt the balance between the oil's components and reduce its lubrication effectiveness.

Take advantage of the opportunity when you change the oil and clean the entire cooling system, such as the pumps, hoses, fluids, and belts.

  • Advice? Based on your needs, use one type or another. For normal use, stick to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Air filter

  • Needs? Think of the air filter like the lungs of your 4x4. It checks for dust and dirt, and if necessary, clean or replace it.
  • What could you be doing wrong? Not replacing a clogged filter (whether it's fuel, air, or oil) can negatively affect acceleration time.
  • Advice? Filters don't improve engine power; they improve its reliability. They improve its cleanliness and you will increase the engine's reliability.

Soft drinks

  • Needs? Reviewing them periodically will help you save on costly repairs and even prevent accidents.
  • What could you be doing wrong? Nearly 50% of the problems with the engine may be caused by poor cooling.
  • Advice? Change this product when you are interested in changing the vehicle's applications.

Battery:

  • Needs? Ensure the terminals are not corroded; otherwise, use baking soda to clean them.
  • What could you be doing wrong? Check for loose cables to ensure the battery is securely fastened.
  • Advice? Excessively starting and stopping the engine leads to increased wear on some of the vital parts of your 4x4. Try to minimize these actions and you will help maintain the engine's good condition.

Straps

  • What could you be doing wrong? Check that there is no more than 1.5 cm of play, otherwise they will be too loose.
  • Advice? Check for burns or wear.

Shock absorbers

  • Needs? Each terrain requires a different damping. For example, a stiffer shock absorber will help you maintain stability semi-stable terrain, such as dunes and softer ones will be ideal for rocky or difficult terrain.
  • What could you be doing wrong? Ensure there are no oil leaks, loose parts, or missing parts.
  • Advice? When you change the shock absorbers, take the opportunity to check that they don't limit the suspension travel.

Differentials

  • Advice? Check the oil and tighten the drain plug after every off-road outing.
  • What could you be doing wrong? If your 4x4 has rear-facing differential covers, it's a good idea to protect them to prevent oil loss from impacts.

Clutch

  • Advice? Check the adjustment and try to avoid engaging the clutch in deep mud or water.
  • What could you be doing wrong? It's possible that you're using the clutch improperly by not pressing it down completely when shifting gears, which causes excessive pressure on the clutch plates and shortens their lifespan.

Brakes

  • What could you be doing wrong? Check the fluid level, ensure there are no cracks in the hoses, and that the brake pads are not worn.
  • Advice? Brake fluid directly affects vehicle safety, so extreme caution is advised. Remember to check the original specified brake fluid, as different types are incompatible with each other.

Tires

  • Needs? Check the condition of your tires regularly
  • What could you be doing wrong? Don't skip checking your tire pressure. This improves fuel efficiency, reduces tire wear, and alerts you if your vehicle is properly aligned.
  • Advice? This is another vehicle safety feature. You can find them in hybrid models, meaning for both off-road and road use. Choose them based on how you intend to use them.

The best advice? Follow your vehicle's preventive maintenance so you can enjoy it to the fullest.
